ESRB ratings are designed to provide concise and impartial information about the content in computer and video games so consumers, especially parents, can make informed purchase decisions.

The rating system has two parts:

Rating Symbols, found on the front of game packages, suggest age-appropriateness.

Content Descriptors, found on the back, indicate elements in the game that may have triggered the rating and/or may be of interest or concern.

RATING SUMMARIES

The ESRB also provides rating summaries, which offer greater detail about the content and overall context that factored into a game's rating. Rating summaries (for titles that have them) are available via the search results on this site.

ONLINE RATING NOTICE

Online-enabled games carry the notice "Online Interactions Not Rated by the ESRB." This notice warns those who intend to play the game online about possible exposure to chat (text, audio, video) or other types of content created by other players (e.g., maps, skins) that have not been considered in the ESRB rating assignment.
